You can do both games f2p, but MTGA is much grindier and much more punishing if you try farming events (going 0-3 in draft or god forbid 0-2 in bo3 draft is much more punishing than going 0-3 in HS Arena). People will say that MTGA is better because you "farm draft" but that's the same as farming Arena in HS, except HS Arena has a MUCH better payout at all levels than MTGA's draft and has a much lower barrier to entry. Yes, you earn more "packs" in MTGA than you do in HS, but each HS "pack" is worth a lot more than an MTGA pack, which you are really only buying for the 1/6th rare WC.

It isn't the most generous game out there, but it is miles ahead of Hearthstone. But such is the F2P life everywhere: It takes time to get what you want. Long-term (think 1-2 months), if you are diligent with your dailies, you'll usually have enough to spend on a top-tier control deck. Usually, when you start out, you are limited in which competitive decks you can make, and are pretty much forced into 1 of 2 (mono-blue or mono-red). Control decks are pricey because they require a lot of rare cards.

There are several tournament style events with cards as payouts and a buyin that allows you to break even and walk away with cards at a 50/50 winrate. In addition, you get 3 packs a week from quests as well as a lot of different decks to start out with. Do well enough in those and you can build up a collection very quickly, as contrary to Hearthstone, you keep all the cards you pick for your deck in addition to the prizes you get tehre. It is way better and has a rather generous model.īy doing the worst dailies alone, you earn about 1 cardpack a day, or enough for 1-2 drafts a week (equivalent of HS Arena Mode).
